I SO enjoy hole-in-the-wall diners and this one is a classic with its narrow space decorated in southern Florida brilliant colors. There's a mix of 1950s chrome and yellow stools and modern granite countertops giving the place a welcoming comfortable feel. All the waitstaff are "moms" making you feel like a nostalgic kid at the breakfast table. The meals are ample with a very reasonable price. The blue berry pancakes are the bomb; almost crêpe like, extremely moist and so sweet no syrup needed. However, like most restaurants trying to keep the profit margin sustainable, ingredients are obviously the least - please note the honey jar photo that's really high fructose corn syrup - and honey. Ewwwww!

I went to try this place based on the reviews, for the majority were great reviews. I am not sure as to why all these customers rate this place so highly as it only worth 1 star. I am avid restaurant eater, from fine dining to the places with a hole in the wall, and that place is off my list. The service is not great, walked in and stood at the door for a few minutes, no one great you, had no idea if we supposed to grab a sit. The food has no flavor, no salt, just plain. The worst part is the hygiene of the place. Since we sat at the counter where the kitchen is in plain view, I witnessed the waitress handling the cash, then grab everyone toast with her bare hands, put butter on them and place them on the placed. She did not wash her hands, nor put on any gloves. The cook is also using the same knife to cut vegetables, fruits or anything else he needed. So if you have any allergies, stay away. So if you are looking for good food, clean and great service, that place doesn't offer any of that.

We called this place since it's the holiday to make sure they were open. They said they close at 2pm today so we arrived at 1:45pm and they had already locked the door and waved us away. Talk about rude & inconsistent. These people must only care about getting a beer and walking across the street to the beach more than surviving as a business. I certainly won't be back. We wound up walking around the corner to Delacaseas which is open til 4pm and the service was impeccable and the food was delicious so I consider it a blessing in disguise. The complimentary ginger scone was delicious. Avoid diner by the sea - I would not be surprised if they go out of business. Relaxed atmosphere ? Sure is, so relaxed they don't care about serving new customers.

Place was so inviting and the staff extremely friendly. The food was amazing and had that home cooked flair to it. So close to the beach too. Loved it!! The grits are amazing and their pancakes melt in your mouth.

Great environment, friendly staff, and the food is amazing! We came here on Sunday for brunch. Is is busy, but the quality of the food is still amazing! I definitely recommend this place!

I'm a frequent Sunday brunches and diners are always one of my favorite places to get a good while breakfast. Diner by the Sea was an utter disappointment for so many reasons. The atmosphere is very clustered and crowded so there is a very limited number of ppl who can sit inside. The service was awful!! Apology in advance but our waitress was past the point of retirement and should NOT have been serving food. Outside of her unable to hear much of what I said, myself and a friend asked for one of their complimentary mimosas, which was basically OJ served in a plastic cup that you get on an airline flight. If that wasn't enough the small plates put in front of us were previously eaten off of and contained all the buttery grease and bread crumbs. We asked politely for new, clean plates and to my complete disgust, we watch her go behind the counter and wipe off the same plate and went to serve it to us again. That did it! I immediately, out of courtesy for the other patrons stated there was a family emergency and hauled ass out of there. Very disappointing experience to say the least. Oh, and it's cash only.

Oh my! Found this local spot a year ago through Groupon. Now my favorite! Such an adorable place with the most delicious banana pancakes and eggs benny! Everything is always delicious. Shannon is always the sweetest!

AWESOME PLACE! Try their special of the day.. Their omelet was amazing, the people are great! You feel like your in Mayberry but steps from the ocean... Great conversations going on and we met some wonderful folks! Tell them mark and lissa sent you! :)

AMAZING! We were welcomed with mimosas and friendly faces. Everyone was so nice! The food was incredible. We will certainly be back!!!!

Had Sunday brunch here. The place is a bit small, but the speedy service and even friendlier staff more than make up for it! The food was good, but not the best hence the 4 stars. The location is prime as it's right near the beach and the menu options are very reasonably priced. I plan on doing many more brunches here.

You have to come here for breakfast. Reminds you of Mel's Diner. Wait staff very friendly. Fresh food. Loved it.

One of the best diners in the Fort Lauderdale area. Had delicious eggs Benedict and my sister had the croissant sandwich. We both loved our meal. The home fries were tasty to. I definitely recommend this diner.

  • Julia T.

We came here as a quick breakfast stop before a day of sightseeing. It didn't disappoint in terms of quality of food, portion size, or service. Although we had to keep asking for coffee refills (and cream for said coffee), they were happy to oblige and gave us what we needed. That said, this diner is quite small. Parties bigger than perhaps three will have to sit at the bar area because all booths are very small.

Small and crowded eatery. Overpriced and cash only. I ordered a very simple typical American breakfast with ham, eggs, home fries and toast. For my daughter I ordered pancake, sausage links, home fries. Sausage links were cold inside with a taste of freezer. Home fries were oily. $28 total before tips. Will not come back again.

Come here for the FOOD and service. Their grilled fish sandwich is awesome!!!! Breakfast- so good and inexpensive with the 2-2-2. Everyone we have told about this place becomes a regular.

    (5)
  • Cliff E.

A few things make up a great 5 star experience. What you get at the price that its offered. Quality of food. And quality of service! All three were up there. By far best 2-2-2 breakfast in the area cause the pancakes are light, fluffy, and that old fashion type. Very good. Definitely coming back! They have Groupon special items and other offers at least at this time! Take advantage and enjoy your try and experience!

I read so many great reviews about this place that my husband and I decided it was time we check it out for breakfast. It is a small and charming restaurant. Upon entering we were warmly greeted not only by the wait staff, but also by a few customers who we assumed must be regulars. What a nice way to start the day! The menu consists of the usual breakfast fare but also includes German potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream, unfortunately by the time we arrived they were sold out. I chose the 2-2-2 breakfast which consists of 2 eggs any style, 2 sausage links or patties with home fries and 2 pancakes or slices of toast (go for the pancakes, you can get toast anytime). I ordered my eggs scrambled and there were definitely more than 2 eggs. The pancakes are terrific, the size of a dinner plate. My husband ordered the 2 fried eggs with thick sliced bacon (about 4 pieces) and toast. Add bottomless cups of coffee and great service (thank you Nancy P.) and you have the perfect breakfast. We will definitely return. Next time lunch.

I hag high hopes because I love their sister restaurant but we skipped out after being there for 7 min. Not great service, not hygienic at all, so I was worried about getting food poisoning so we left. Not going back.

My family was recently visiting and had a groupon for this diner.. They raved about the BLT and said we had to try it out. We also purchased the groupon and ordered breakfast. I have been out here 6 years and cannot believe this was my first visit. I ordered the breakfast crossantwich with bacon and it was perfect. My boyfriend had the eggs benedict and he said the hollandaise sauce was light but flavorful. We will be back =) They offer a Brazilian menu tues-fri and starting October they have a German menu.. exciting

A diner is generally described as a restaurant built like a railroad car and I guess Diner By The Sea would qualify under that definition in being long and narrow but luncheonette would be more of my definition. Also though it is not too far from the beach you certainly don't see the sea! They do have a good sized menu and they serve breakfast and lunch. The first thing I noticed when I sat down at the table was a sign to the left of the cook's station that said, "I can only please one person at a time and TODAY IS NOT YOUR DAY!" I do have a sense of humor and I love varied and different restaurant signs but, for some reason, I saw this as an omen. We were greeted promptly by the server who took and served our drink order. I told her it was our first time there and asked her what she would suggest. After naming a dozen items I got the feeling she would say all the items were great. As a server I would always suggest 1 or 2 items to a customer and I expect a server to know what the cook on duty excels at and to suggest that item or items. Allen ordered the turkey club ($9.99) and I ordered the Rueben ($9.99) as there really wasn't anything 'different' on the menu and we decided to share those items. Both came with a hearty portion of everyday fries, a good portion of good cole slaw, neither runny or dry, and a pickle. Allen had his diet coke ($2.99) and I had coffee, at the same price. To sum up the sandwiches the best way to describe items that you have had, by this time, thousands of time, the club was too dry and the Rueben was too 'wet' with the cheese and dressing dripping all over the place. I couldn't figure out the service as there were 7 customers--another 2 at a table and 3 at the counter--and yet our server was running all over the place, seemingly not having time to refill me coffee and bringing the slaw later. There was another server but she was busy out in the back smoking. We had a groupon for 2 entrees and 2 drinks for $21. When we got the check it showed we owed $3 and after questioning it seems only if you order entrees for under $8. Okay so with the $12 I paid for the groupon plus the $3 and a $5 tip it came to $10 each for lunch which isn't bad. I might add this is a very touristy area and which the city has really spruced up for the two blocks near the ocean so prices weren't bad. The bottom line is that Diner By The Sea is like thousands of restaurants in South Florida offering nothing special and not particularly good. Would I go back? No. From the reviews I just read it seems going there for breakfast is the better deal.

Cash only?what year is this 1954?that's when the staff opened the place and haven't cleaned it. This place is disgusting. Everything Bout it including the 90 yr old waitress with poop stains on her butt. I wanted to throw up. This is the person handling my food. Food tastes dirty and old. Stay away from this place. Wish I had taken pictures of the weirdness and the food.

The BEST Home-Fries you can get in Broward! The sirloin that came with The Chopper was perfectly cooked as were the scrambled eggs. The 2-2-2 was equally exceptionally prepared with also perfect eggs served along with fluffy, crepe-like delicious pancakes and properly cooked melt-in-your mouth bacon! A slice of watermelon came with and finished off 2 terrific breakfast meals!

Awesome little place - delicious food and friendly staff. We sat at the counter and the cook was engaging and we ended up talking. We ate our fill, leaving almost nothing; the cook then gave us a complimentary pancake to try - it was beyond awesome. There was no need for syrup or any condiments - going back tomorrow for more. Convenient parking is just around the corner of this little gem of a place.

We visit the area and beach very often. At this establishment we discovered great food and large portions, great value, very pleasant and friendly staff. This is our new 'go to place' for breakfast in Lauderdale by the Sea.

Waitress and prices were great. A little heavy but that's my preference and only reason didn't give a 5.

  • Amy M.

We had breakfast here today and we loved it. The whole staff was very friendly and my eggs were cooked just the way I asked. The customers looked like locals who know where to get a good meal. Cute diner atmosphere and you can walk to the beach after your meal.

  • Hannah M.

The entire staff made me feel at home. The food was cooked to perfection. I cannot express enough how much I loved this restarsunt! The menu offers basic diner fare, but it is prepared with care. Do not go if you are in a rush. Go if you want to enjoy a casual and comfortable beach meal. Please note it is cash only.

Very small hole in the wall diner. Cute friendly and decent food. Was in for breakfast and all was good. Nothing stood out but the friendly waitresses.

FOOD POISONING!! Went there for breakfast at around 7am and ordered the eggs Benedict. by 11-12noon I was confined to my bed Literally only getting up to go to the bathroom. This lasted all day and night. By the second day I felt a little better until I had to go to the bathroom. Completely liquified for days.. Great way to ruin a vacation!!

We found a deal on groupon and what a cute little diner. Not much seating but we got right in sat down for breakfast and they had a good breakfast menu, I tried the special of the day which was lobster eggs Benedict, it was delish. They offered complimentary mimosa which was very good. Good food at diner low prices. Great find and we are planning to go back for lunch this week.

This diner did not disappoint. Complimentary mimosa? Yes please! Great food and quick, yet friendly service.

Great breakfast spot! Best food and service in the area. Try the eggs Benedict. This diner is the place to go.

The place is small and I am sure gets busy fast, but we went for breakfast early on a Saturday and had no problem getting a table. Very friendly wait staff, fast service, and WONDERFUL pancakes.... the best. They are thin, a little sweet, crunchy on the edges (my husband said a friend used to make something similar called Norwegian Pancakes?) you don't need syrup. Next time, I will try them with fruit. The biscuits and gravy were also wonderful - nice thyme flavor. We will be back!

We just got off our flight from boston and came right here. The service was very slow. It was so disorganized and you couldn't tell who was supposed to be helping you and who wasn't. There was a guy that worked there...not sure what his job was...all he did was take pictures of the food and stare at us the entire time...and the place was packed. We sat at the counter and he stood right next to me 90% of the time completely creeping. Food was mediocre and took forever. It seemed like everyone else got their orders before we did. We won't be coming back! Our server was an older woman and was very friendly so we give two stars for her.

This is a small but quaint place. Breakfast is great. Pancakes are light. Not a lot of seating but traffic moves fast. Reminds me of the diners up north.

Strolling the downtown area, I came across this gem. I popped in for lunch and was greeted by the friendly Diner By The Sea staff. I felt right at home. I was promptly greeted and handed theme I with a smile from my waitress at the counter. She quickly brought my soda and asked if I was ready to order. I wanted something light and fresh so I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad. I am watching my carbs so I requested no croutons. My salad was presented and it was perfect. Just enough salad dressing with the perfect combination of Parmesan, fresh, tasty grilled chicken and romaine lettuce. Very tasty and it hit the spot. I would definitely recommend Diner By The Sea not only for the fresh and delicious menu, but for the friendly, down home atmosphere, convenience and the helpful staff.

    (5)
  • Natalie W.

Biscuits and gravy were creamy and delicious! Chicken fried steak was crispy and good! Pancakes and sausage were on point. The place is super tiny so I wouldn't really go with more than a party of 4. and if it gets busy there may be a wait but it'll be worth it. You can always walk off your breakfast on the beach!

    (5)
  • Ginger M.

I do not commonly write reviews, but this place was great. We sat at the counter allowing us to watch our food be prepared. Excellent breakfast and reasonable prices. I was sort of concerned because I noticed they had a groupon. Sometimes a groupon is a signal that something may be slightly off. Diner by the sea exceeded my expectations!

  • Katelin M.

Found this place while in a vacation/work trip in ft lauderdale. It was a cute diner with very nice owners and staff. A lot of locals came in and you could tell they were treated like family. We had breakfast and the eggs, bacon and gravy was very good! My mom had an omelette and it was very well made and full of fresh ingredients. There wasn't any breakfast places around where we were staying and this place was worth the short 4 mile trip.

    (5)
  • Andrew W.

Went for breakfast when I was down in town and was not disappointed! The food was excellent and the mom and pop feel for the diner really made the breakfast/brunch enjoyable. My girlfriend got potato pancakes and they were delicious! We both raved on how much the food reminded us of a diner in Europe. I got the spinach and chicken omelette special, and let me tell you - was not let down at all. Delicious all around! Place is a wonderful spot to stop by, small venue and really rewarding brunch.

I went here with a friend on a Saturday morning before hitting the beach. As other pictures suggest, the food is prepared in front of you. It's a quaint diner which also offers German fare nightly (which we unfortunately didn't get to try). Most of the patrons seem to be old locals and by the banter you can tell the staff knows them well. Friend and I had the short stacks (about 3 pancakes) which were more crepe like than I thought. He got his with two thick cut slices of bacon too. It's nice diner fare and I would definitely go back to try the German food (there's also a few other German places nearby on Commercial Blvd).

  • Ashley C.

Ate brunch here on a Sunday after reading yelp reviews. Lots of locals...loved it! The owners (?)/ staff knew everyone and were quite friendly to us newbies. Was offered a complimentary mimosa which was a nice change up. My favorite part of my breakfast were the pancake and home fries! OmG,....very good

I recently went in for breakfast with my husband and found this cutesy key west style diner, loved it so much We went back the same night to try the Brazilian menu!! In the morning Lisa was my server. She was very lovely and attentive making small talk as we waited for our meals. My husband had the Monte Christo sandwich which he said was amazing!! I had both the Lobster Benedict and country fried steak ,since I'm six months pregnant and couldn't make up my mind, ate almost everything it was so delicious!! Later on that we tried the chop salad for two which is out of this world with the dill added to their house Cesar dressing. The picanha steak was cooked to perfection with just the right about of salt. My husband couldn't get enough of the feijoada which is a pork stew with rice and beans. We will definitely be coming back real soon!!

For a touristee place, the dun a good job, and I'm sure that the food would attract the locals around Lauderdale By The Sea. As I was playing tourist that day, stopped in to meet some friends at Diner By The Sea. The serving staff was friendly and attentive, and although slightly higher in price then your normal diner, Diner By The Sea was serving large portions like all other diners. We went for breakfast and everyone was pretty much happy with there orders. The omelets looked good, although I just had the fruit and yogurt, it was very good.

Disgusting!! Expensive !! This place is a dump.I would give it zero stars if I could. The parking was expensive and the palace was dirty and old should have walked out. My pankcakes were brunt and dripping in butter. Don't waste your time or money. Go to ihop! Or Denny down the street.

Went here for dinner for "Brazilian' steak dinner. By far the WORST steak we have ever had....,shoe leather would have been better!!! Nice people but horrible food.

  • Todd B.

Went for breakfast and no complaints. Small cozy place with metered parking. We both had pancakes and bacon...the short stack was plenty (two good sized cakes). I had chocolate chips added. I like chocolate, but, it was too many! Otherwise, good bacon, good coffee and no service issues.

What a great little hole-in-the-wall diner. Our server was new, apparently it was her first week, but she was incredibly friendly. The whole diner had a homey feel, for example, the waitress didn't know if they had cranberry juice, so she went over and checked the refrigerator, just like you would at home. I had the chicken salad sandwich and would definitely recommend it. The also tried my friend's burger, not as good. The best part was watching n them grill the chicken and make it all from scratch right in front of me, no pre-made foods. This place was great, give it a try!

  • Laureen B.

I'm speaking for the nightly German fare...it is excellent! Service is sweet and efficient! Great specials on das boots of beers, plus Wed and Thurs nite dinner specials like lobster and prime rib. The german food is authentic and the portions are huge. Great value! I am German and grew up with this kind of food, so it is very authentic!

  • Dawn E.

The staff is here is stellar. I pure joy to visit. And they gave extra care and attention to my father, who can be difficult, so, you know, bonus points. This is the place the locals go to eat some breakfast and read a paper. It's the "Cheers" of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Also, the home fries are amazing.

  • Monika K.

friends and i came here for an early morning bfast on a cold south florida day. wait for a seat, wait for semi rude service, smaller portions for bfast, eggs benedict, just A OK to Meh. minimal amount of homefries on your plate. CASH ONLY, sister and her bf love the pancakes, they are super thin and almost crepe like.

  • Charles S.

Burnt eggs, bacon and potatoes. Food was over priced and you have to pay for everything with cash. Complete rip off. Regular place was close which forced us here. Go anywhere else, heck eat of the floor in the bathroom instead of this place. Unacceptable.

    (1)
  • Sierra K.

Small portions. Over priced. My food came out cold and I was sitting right at the grill. The place was full of very old people who were staring at my friend and I. They had good pancakes though.

I was only in town for a short while. I loved the people. They made great simple breakfast. The chef kicked some serious tail and made everything just right. Thanks for making me feel like a regular

I've stopped by here several times and over the number of times I have stopped, the service and variety of menu offerings has clearly been on the decline. On October 22, 2011 they had the wrong menus on the table, they were out of hot dogs, their menu specialty being a cod fish sandwich had been discontinued, I wasn't even offered a warm up on my coffee, the sandwich which I ordered on toasted bread came untoasted, the bill was merely plopped down without a thank you or an inquiry as to my meal. In all, rather disappointing and since I do experience better elsewhere in the local area, I regretfully feel obligated to drop from 4 to 2 stars.

I went here for lunch, which was apparently my mistake. Can't speak for breakfast. I ordered the chili dog and my husband ordered a burger. We enjoyed the retro atmosphere and the service was good. Kind, quick waitress. However, I found the food options to be pretty limited even for diner fare, and our selections weren't that great. The hot dog in my chili dog had been inexplicably bisected and laid out flat on a bun, then smothered in chili that was almost entirely bean. There were also two chili dogs, somehow? I don't know. I didn't want to dig through the chili, but it didn't taste very good. The fries were just fries. Hubby saw the cook just pour them out of a bag. Not homemade or anything. The menu also promised cole slaw and a pickle with every lunch entree. I received neither, hubby got only a pickle. We had coupons from our hotel, but even if you do as well I'd advise going elsewhere. There are SO many places to eat in Lauderdale and if you're there for a short time like we were, you can't waste an opportunity for great food.

  • Kat K.

Best pancakes I ever had!! They are really delicious and thin. The hash browns are good and the bacon is great. This little gem is a great breakfast place but I have not tried their nights featuring German food. The staff is great and friendly, a place that has been around for years. Only downside to this place is that it's not really wheelchair accessible as it s a long narrow restaurant with bar stools attached to the counter.

  • Edward N.

Eat where the locals eat! These are the same people who, for years, ran the Pier restaurant. The view is gone but the food and service are great. I've just heard that they are now open for dinner. Haven't tried it yet but heard it's quite good.
